What REALLY Works for Weight Loss?

Maylin Rodriguez-Paez, RN

You’re probably tired of all the silly diet claims shown on TV. And trust us, if it sounds too good to be true, it is.

The reality is that you can’t lose weight "miraculously". No amount of creams or wraps will shrink your waist, neither will wishful thinking.

Why? Because losing weight takes hard work.

So if you're looking for a weight loss strategy that will actually work, start here. Ready to take some notes?

Cut and Burn Calories to Lose Weight

Have you ever heard of the 250 Principle? It’s actually very simple: Cut an extra 250 calories a day from your diet, and burn an extra 250 calories every day.

1. Cutting 250 calories

We hate to break it to you, but you need to control your mouth to drop the pounds. Now, we’re not asking you to starve or resort to an all-grapefruit diet. All we’re asking is that you cut 250 calories from your diet daily. Sound easy enough?

If you don’t count calories, that’s okay. Just get familiar with the foods that can easily provide 100 calories or more in a serving and cut them out. Sodas come to mind as do many others. Don't be afraid to check out those nutrition labels. They really do help!

2. Burning 250 calories

Exercise is not always seemingly fun, but it really can be. The idea is to get your body moving. Do you have to prepare for a marathon or exercise at the gym all day? No. All you have to do is burn 250 extra calories a day. An hour of brisk walking, dancing or bike riding can easily get you there.

So far, we’ve suggested that you cut 250 calories and burn 250 calories daily. This equates to about a pound of weight loss a week, which is both safe AND do-able.

Blood Testing for Weight Loss

Did you know that blood tests can help you lose weight? They can help you pinpoint issues that may be causing your weight-related problems. Here are some examples:

  1. Fasting insulin: Insulin allows your cells to use sugar. High levels may cause excess body fat.
  2. Leptin: Leptin is a hormone that controls appetite. It reaches your brain to “switch off” hunger signals. Elevated levels can lead to over-eating.
  3. C-reactive protein (CRP): CRP is a measure of inflammation. It can bind to leptin and prevent it from reaching your brain.
  4. Thyroid hormones: Thyroid hormones indicate how well your thyroid gland is working. Even a slightly low-functioning thyroid can lead to unnecessary weight gain.
So, rather than wonder why you can’t lose weight, take some blood tests. They can paint the actual picture, which brings us to our next point.

Supplements for Weight Loss

There really are a variety of nutrients for weight loss that work, but which are right for you?

The best way to find out is to identify your problems with blood tests so that you can supplement accordingly. Supplementation may then help you correct the underlying metabolic issues which have been hindering your weight loss goals.

For example, if you have elevated CRP and leptin levels, African mango seed extract (Irvingia) may be right for you. Research shows it supports weight loss and lowers CRP levels.

In one placebo-controlled study, those taking a seed extract of Irvingia gabonensis, a West African traditional food, lost 12.8 pounds on average over 10 weeks. The placebo group lost less than 0.7 pounds on average.1

Losing weight does take work, but it’s definitely not impossible.

Great tips but also I like to mention that one mainly overlooked factor is that humans are naturally born with a certain built. Some are born with a big stature and all do not have to be matchstick thin and look like super models. It is ok to be pleasantly plump.

Wireless Lan Modules - Yes, genetics plays a role in body-build- that we totally agree on. And being super-model thin is not necessarily healthy. Thanks for chiming in!

I wish to show my appreciation to the writer just for bailing me out of such a trouble. As a result of surfing through the search engines and obtaining tricks which were not powerful, I figured my entire life was gone. Being alive minus the approaches to the problems you have solved by means of your main write-up is a serious case, and the ones which may have badly affected my career if I had not come across your web page. Your good skills and kindness in controlling all areas was precious. I don't know what I would've done if I hadn't come across such a step like this. I can also at this point look forward to my future. Thank you so much for your high quality and results-oriented guide. I won't think twice to recommend the blog to any person who should receive assistance on this situation.

Dietary supplements are unnecessary if one eats a balanced diet. Moreover, many supplements have no practical effect. For example, glucosamine and chondroitin, often thought to relieve joint pain, have been shown to be without benefit. Relief reported for these supplements may be explained by the fact that many people taking them on a doctor's recommendation are also taking other pain relievers. Another common supplement, omega-3 fatty acids, has been similarly shown to be without benefit for healthy individuals. Thanks for sharing such a helpful article.

Albert - We find that even people eating a well-balanced diet may have nutrient deficiencies. Poor soil conditions, food processing, and modern farming practices lead to nutrient-poor foods. Even government-funded studies have shown differences in the nutrient content of foods today compared to decades ago.
