Green Coffee Bean Extract Shows Weight Loss Potential

By Michael A. Smith, MD

Looking to lose a little weight? If that’s the case, according to a recently published clinical trial, you should try green coffee bean. Now, we’re not talking about drinking tons of coffee to increase caffeine intake, which can also help to lose weight — this is something different.

What we’re talking about with this study is an extract derived from green coffee beans. These young coffee beans are rich in chlorogenic acid, an antioxidant currently known for helping to tame blood sugar spikes. As it turns out, that same chlorogenic acid may also be able to help you drop some pounds. Pretty convenient, isn’t it?

And that’s a real good thing considering Americans are heavier than ever before in history. As such, anything that shows weight loss properties is quick to catch the interest of researchers and consumers alike.

Let’s take a look at the study.

Green Coffee Bean Extract Weight Loss Study Setup

This was a 22-week crossover study conducted to examine the effectiveness and safety of a commercial green coffee bean extract and its impact on weight loss and body mass. The study enrolled a total of 16 overweight adults.1

The test subjects received a 1050 mg, high-dose coffee extract, a low 700 mg dose or placebo in separate 6-week treatment periods. Each period was followed by a 2-week washout period to reduce any influence of the preceding treatments.

Let’s look at what one person, let’s call him Dan, would have gone through given the methodology laid out in the study (Dan is completely fictional and his numbers reflect the averages for the study subjects):

  1. Dan is 33 years old and overweight. His BMI is 28. He’s otherwise healthy, with no medical problems. Dan eats 2400 calories a day. He is enrolled into the study and told not to make any changes to his diet.
  2. Dan is given 1050 mg per day of the coffee extract. He continues to eat about 2400 calories a day. This goes on for 6 weeks. This is labeled “arm 1” of the study.
  3. Dan stops taking the extract and returns to his “normal” life for 2 weeks. This is the first washout phase.
  4. Dan is now given 700 mg per day of the coffee extract. Again, he eats about 2400 calories a day. This goes on for another 6 weeks. This is labeled “arm 2” of the study.
  5. Dan stops taking the extract for another 2 weeks. This the second washout phase.
  6. Lastly, Dan is given a placebo for 6 weeks. He follows the same diet as previously described. This is labeled “arm 3” of the study.
During each 6-week treatment phase, body weight, body mass index and percent body fat are measured. So what did the researchers find?

Green Coffee Extract Leads to Weight Loss

With no change in diet, all subjects lost significant weight, experienced a decrease in BMI and dropped their percent body fat. And these positive changes only occurred when taking the green coffee bean extract.1

The authors write, “The results are consistent with human and animal studies and a meta-analysis of the efficacy of green coffee extract in weight loss. The results suggest that green coffee extract may be an effective nutraceutical in reducing weight loss in pre-obese adults, and may be an inexpensive means of preventing obesity in overweight adults.”

And remember, this is going beyond just the caffeine. This shows that a green coffee extract, rich in chlorogenic acid, can lead to significant weight loss in pre-obese adults. The exact mechanism is unknown but definitely warrants further investigation.

Pretty interesting, isn’t it?

This is interesting and appears significant. But I would like to see a bigger study than 16 people. How many people were used in the previous human and animal studies?

Anonymous said...

I was unable to open the Reverend page to see the study results. Where are the numbers? What is significant weight loss and fat loss? Seems fishy to me!!!

Ranvir said...

This is interesting and appears significant. thanks for infotmations.

The study indicates that it will decrease blood pressure. There needs to be studies on people that have issues with blood pressure, diabetes etc. to see how the extract affects them. I do take blood pressure medicine, my concern is will the extract react adverserly with any of the medicines that I am on? How would they know if they only use healthy individuals in the research?

Life Extension said...

You're right...more research is needed. A clinical study showing positive benefits in hypertensive patients would solidify it's position as an anti-hypertensive.

Thanks for sharing such a great news with us.But they have not completed there research on it.If it will be confirm it can work a lot.

Am I reading the charts correctly -- looks like the placebo folks lost just as much as those taking the BCA.

xfileluv said...

I am confused by this, as it contradicts itself: "With no change in diet, all subjects lost significant weight, experienced a decrease in BMI and dropped their percent body fat. And these positive changes only occurred when taking the green coffee bean extract."

So, did all subjects in all categories lose weight, or just those in the gcb group? I think it is just poor writing. However, looking at the graphics, it seems as if they ALL lost weight. Also, the study doesn't differentiate between the 1050mg and 700mg results. So, is more better, or does it not matter? I'm disappointed in the writing skills of these supposed academics.

Life Extension said...

xfileluv: Thanks for your comments. It seems confusing because it was a "crossover" study. So all participants at one point took the green coffee bean extract. It was during this phase of the study, that the participants lost weight.

Life Extension said...

All subjects lost weight. That's true. But this happened because all subjects eventually took both a low and high dose of the coffee extract. But the power of a crossover study is that it allows for the researchers to really tease out if the coffee extract caused the weight loss...and it did!

Well i heard about the green tea. But first time to see the picture of this green beans. Yes as they said above, chlorogenic acid content is there, so obviously it will reduce some kgs of weight. Goog blog this one is.

How about if you have low blood pressure? Is it still ok to take green coffee bean extract?

Hypnotizr Quinn said...

This may be a silly question but do you think this would be suitable for someone with a caffeine sensitivity?

Life Extension said...

That's not a silly question. The amount of caffeine in green tea averages around 25-50 mg per cup -- coffee has around 150-300 mg per cup. If that's still too much caffeine, consider a decaf brand or a decaf extract.

I have ordered this item yesterday- i am afraid that this product will not work. I have been trying to lose weight for a year. My question to you is: when starting the pill how often should this pill be taken and when should I stop taking it?

Anonymous said...

I am diabetic and trying to get the blood sugar and weight under control. I bought the Pure Health brand, July 24, took 800 mg at lunch, 800 mg. at dinner. A.M. July 25, blood sugar 140 and 160. Previously 115 to 120. I will give this a week for fear of having a high average blood glucose. I have been on Metformin 500 mg once a day for 5 years with A1C at 6.5. No other metabolic conditions. Diagnosed 2007, A1C at 14. 2006 physical and blood - Normal. 2007 physical and blood - Diabetic and menopause:(

How exact is the 30 minute timing of taking the pills before eating? Can it be a little more -- like 45 min. or an hour?

Anonymous said...

All that sounds good, but once you stop taking the pills do you gain the weight back?

Anonymous said...

i will be honest, today is my sixth day faithfully taking this green coffee extract and I feel great, 800mg in am. and 800mg around lunch. I quickly noticed my energy level increase from the first day. I also take 200mg of raspberry ketones to increase motabolism. Dont know how much weight I've lost but I know its helped as I can tell my clothes is fitting less snug.I'm heavy in my mid section and unfortunately it is the last place where I see results, but thats just me..however, I am seeing good results. I feel good taking this product. I think people just need to try it for themselves.

I don't know if anybody has noticed, but the data are presented with a significant distortion. Note Weeks from Start
Initial.. =0 weeks
End Arm 1= 6 weeks [6 week period]
End Washout= 8 Weeks[2 week period]
End Arm 2= 15 weeks [6 week period]
End Washout= 17 weeks [2 week period]
End Arm 3= 23 weeks [6 week period]

If you will notice, sometimes a lot of weight was lost in that 2 week wash-out period, and you could easily suggest that the washout period was responsible for a significant percentage of the weight loss, but it all occurred in just 4 weeks compared to 6, 12 or 18 months of the treatment arm totals.

So, you should take these results with a large grain of salt, and be careful of not choking.

Life Extension said...

A 2-week washout phase is standard for cross-over studies. During this time, no significant weight loss was reported.

Anonymous - Is your product standardized to contain chlorogenic acid? This is the active ingredient in green coffee which has been shown to promote weight loss. Also, it’s important that you take the right amount. Supportive dosages range between 200-600 mg.
For optimal results, don’t forget to make healthy changes to your diet and to exercise- if this is okay with your doctor. For more weight loss tips, check this link out: http://ow.ly/fAIkT

Green tea is believed to be one of the most popular ingredients that help in reducing weight due to its diuretic and metabolic stimulating properties. Apart from being a least processed tea type, it also helps in providing certain other health benefits such as metabolism boost, protection from cancer, healthy heart etc. Caffeine is a part of green tea which is also a mild form of appetite suppressant.

I think some of you have confused green tea with green coffee bean extract. They aren't the same thing and they aren't related. Also, don't expect to take these pills and eat like a horse and still loose weight. That's probably not going to happen. I use GCB extract but I didn't start until I had already built heathy eating habits for myself. It's a weight loss aid, you might not have to change your diet to loose the weight so long as you already practice somewhat healthy eating. The studies are done on 2400 calories a day. Make sure you factor in that info before you start taking GCB extract. These people in the study also didn't exercise so imagine the sucess if you do!

Healthy eating can stabilize children’s energy, sharpen their minds, and even out their moods. The childhood impulse to imitate is strong, so it’s important you act as a role model for your kids. It’s no good asking your child to eat fruit and vegetables while parents gorge on potato chips and soda.

I have been taking the Decaffeinated Svetol Green Coffee Bean Extract for a whole week now. The scales are showing a 1kg INCREASE, but I feel a lot slimmer through my waste and chest area. They have been hugely beneficial for my mood elevation, as well as a general get-up-and-go attitude and sense of wellbeing. I have little to no appetite as well. I am therefore very confused! I only have about 3-5 kg that I would like to lose, and I have a very healthy diet. Has anyone had this experience as well? I am unsure as to whether to continue with the pills now, or could it be that the fat is turning into muscle?? I just can't see how a little pill could make me PUT ON weight when I have a very low fat diet anyway!
Any information regarding this would be brilliant :)

LifeExtension said...

Anonymous - Give it at least 1-2 months. It's too soon to decide if the green coffee extract is right for you. It takes time for the human body to make adjustments. And BTW, if you're working out, it's possible to gain muscle weight.

I did my own personal study of GCB to lose weight. I'm the perfect guy for it since I'm more than 50 lb overweight, and rising for the last 20 years. I'm an expert at not losing weight, so if any weight is lost I'll know about it right away.

The brand I bought uses GCA, but I think it's no different from the study. I take 800mg twice a day.

My results have been positive since about 40 minutes after taking my first cap. What I noticed the most is appetite suppression. One 800mg cap hits my appetite with a atom bomb that lasts for maybe 6 to 8 hours. When I eat now I eat less, a lot less. No matter how hungry I start out, after eating about 1/4 to 1/2 my normal I feel stuffed, and the feeling lasts for hours. Even if I get hungry it's easy to ignore, even late at night. My stomach thinks my throat is cut.

Of course I'm losing weight because I'm eating so much less, but there seems to be more to it than that. I train 2 to 3 days a week. On days I don't train I lose weight. On days I train I lose twice as much. I train at night. It used to be after training I was HUNGRY. When I get home I would eat everything in the house on a bad night. Now a little piece of fruit fills me up. Before it would have taken 100 watermelons to put a dent in my appetite.

I really is possible to lose weight without suffering.

I have done lots of research on this product and there are products out there that work great and others that do not. They all say to make sure that the GCB is at least 50% has svetol and contains no fillers or binders otherwise it will not work. I am currently taking garcinia cambogia and was thinking about taking this instead. I have normal blood pressure but am on the lower side of normal and was wondering if this would lower my BP
